3D printing material guide

Use this guide to choose a material based on strength, detail, heat resistance, flexibility, finish, and cost. Platform-fulfilled materials may be limited by current production capacity and available colors.

PLA

FDM

$

Low-cost, easy to print, and good for prototypes, decorative objects, organizers, toys, and light-duty parts.

Low costGood surface qualityStiffNot heat resistant

Recommended for

  • Visual prototypes
  • Desk and home items
  • Low-stress brackets
  • Decorative models

Watch out for

Hot cars, Outdoor heat, High-impact parts, Load-bearing mechanical use

Accuracy: +/-0.3% with a lower limit around +/-0.2 mm

Minimum wall: 1 mm

Finishes: Standard, Sanded

PETG

FDM

$

Durable, chemical resistant, and more heat tolerant than PLA, making it a strong default for practical parts.

DurableChemical resistantFunctionalSlightly flexible

Recommended for

  • Durable household parts
  • Containers
  • Outdoor-adjacent items
  • Functional brackets

Watch out for

Ultra-high detail miniatures, Very high heat, Rigid metal-like parts

Accuracy: +/-0.3% with a lower limit around +/-0.2 mm

Minimum wall: 1 mm

Finishes: Standard, Sanded

ABS

FDM

$

A tough engineering plastic with better impact resistance and heat resistance than PLA, but less suited to fine cosmetic detail.

Impact resistantFunctionalHeat resistantDurable

Recommended for

  • Functional prototypes
  • Impact-prone parts
  • Enclosures
  • Workshop parts

Watch out for

Food contact, Very fine visual models, Parts where warping risk is unacceptable

Accuracy: +/-0.3% with a lower limit around +/-0.2 mm

Minimum wall: 1 mm

Finishes: Standard, Sanded, Polished

TPU

FDM

$$

A flexible rubber-like material for parts that need grip, cushioning, bending, or impact absorption.

FlexibleImpact resistantGripDurable

Recommended for

  • Phone bumpers
  • Feet and pads
  • Flexible hinges
  • Grips
  • Protective covers

Watch out for

Sharp detail, Rigid brackets, Thin tall parts that must stay straight

Accuracy: +/-0.3% with a lower limit around +/-0.3 mm

Minimum wall: 1.2 mm

Finishes: Standard

Nylon

FDM

$$$

A strong, wear-resistant engineering plastic for durable functional parts that need more toughness than PLA or PETG.

StrongHeat resistantFunctionalGood detail

Recommended for

  • Functional parts
  • Hinges
  • Jigs
  • Wear-prone components
  • Heat-resistant prototypes

Watch out for

Lowest-cost prototypes, Glossy cosmetic surfaces, Parts that must stay perfectly dry during storage

Accuracy: +/-0.3% with a lower limit around +/-0.3 mm

Minimum wall: 1 mm

Finishes: Standard

Resin

SLADLPMSLALCD

$$

A smooth, high-detail resin for figurines, display models, and prototypes where appearance matters more than toughness.

High detailSmoothVisualLower toughness

Recommended for

  • Miniatures
  • Figurines
  • Display models
  • High-detail prototypes
  • Smooth surfaces

Watch out for

Impact-prone parts, Snap fits, Outdoor use, High heat

Accuracy: +/-0.2% with a lower limit around +/-0.2 mm

Minimum wall: 0.6 to 1 mm

Finishes: Standard, Matte, Glossy
